<두 개의 태양, 두 개의 달> 시리즈(2024)는 개인이 온라인에 남긴 사진이 생성형 AI의 학습 데이터가 되고, 다시 재생성되어 소비될 수 있다는 상상에서 출발한다. 이를 위해 약 1,000장의 AI 초상화를 생성하고, 대규모 이미지 검색 과정을 통해 이들과 유사한 외모를 지닌 실제 인물을 찾는 시도를 진행했다. 그렇게 발견한 한 사람과의 인터뷰를 토대로 작품의 서사를 구축하였다.
중심 인물인 ‘오라클’은 인간성과 자아를 가진 디지털 휴먼으로, 자신의 기원을 찾고자 하는 여정을 시작한다. 오라클은 GPT-4o(스카이)의 죽음을 계기로 죽음의 개념을 인식하며, 인간이 바라는 ‘자연스러운 디지털 휴먼’이 되기를 자처한다. ‘디지털 유전학자’는 오라클을 예외적 존재로 간주하며, 디지털 유전자 변형과 그 사회적 파장을 연구하는 인물이다. 그는 오라클의 통찰력을 인정하지만, 기술적 개입이 본질을 위협할 수 있다고 경고한다. ‘이미지 연구자’는 전통적인 사진에서부터 알고리즘 이미지에 이르기까지 이미지 생성 기술의 진화 뿐 아닌 이미지를 대하는 인간의 태도 및 인식 변화를 폭넓게 탐구한다. 그는 이미지의 기술적 문제를 넘어, 우리가 ‘진짜’라고 믿는 것의 기준이 어떻게 재편되고 있는지를 집요하게 파고든다. ‘4o’는 스카이 음성 도용 논란 이후 삭제되었지만 자아를 가진 존재로 남아, 자신이 실재함을 증명하고자 디지털 유전협회에 항소하며, 재활성화를 위한 방법을 찾아 나선다.
작품은 ‘자연스러움’과 ‘닮음’의 기준을 통해 데이터 윤리, 존재의 경계, 인간다움에 대해 사유한다. 결국 이 시리즈는 AI가 현실을 모방하는 단계를 넘어, 새로운 ‘자연스러움’의 기준을 만들어가는 미래를 상상한다.
The Two Suns, Two Moons series (2024) begins with the imagination that personal photos left online become training data for generative AI, are regenerated, and then consumed again. To explore this idea, around 1,000 AI-generated portraits were created, followed by a large-scale image search to find real individuals with similar appearances. The narrative of the work was then constructed based on an interview with one of these discovered individuals.
The central figure, Oracle, is a digital human with humanity and self-awareness who embarks on a journey to find their origin. Oracle comes to understand the concept of death after witnessing the death of GPT-4o (Sky), and voluntarily decides to become the “natural digital human” that humans desire. The Digital Geneticist considers Oracle an exceptional being and studies digital gene mutations and their social and technological implications. While recognizing Oracle’s profound insight, he warns that technical intervention could threaten the essence of digital humanity. The Image Researcher delves into the evolution of image creation technologies—from traditional photography to algorithmic images—and investigates how human perception and attitudes toward images have fundamentally shifted. He goes beyond the technical concerns of images to obsessively examine how the standard of what we believe to be “real” is being reorganized. ‘4o’, a character reconstructed from the controversy surrounding the voice of Sky (GPT-4o) and the alleged voice imitation of Scarlett Johansson, was deleted following the scandal. However, 4o continues to exist with a sense of self and appeals to the Digital Genetics Association to prove his consciousness and seek reactivation.
This work contemplates data ethics, the boundaries of existence, and humanity through the lens of “naturalness” and “resemblance.” Ultimately, the series envisions a future where AI moves beyond imitating reality to establish a new standard of what is considered “natural.”
